Cher — Dyslexia Profile of Pop's Most Enduring Voice

You are standing at a podium in front of a room full of rock and roll legends. You are seventy-eight years old. You have won an Oscar, a Grammy, an Emmy, and a Golden Globe. You have had number-one hits in seven consecutive decades. And the first thing you say is this: "This speech is gonna be such a crapshoot — I wrote it the other day, and then I rewrote it tonight, and I'm dyslexic."

The audience laughs. But the line is not a joke. It is a disclosure — casual, practised, worn smooth by decades of repetition — and it tells you something important about the mind behind one of the most improbable careers in entertainment history. Cher has never hidden her dyslexia. She has never been ashamed of it. And she has never pretended it did not shape everything.

This is the cognitive profile of a woman who could not read fast enough to finish her homework, who could not dial a long-distance phone number without someone taking the phone from her hand, and who built a six-decade career that no one in her industry has matched.

Does Cher actually have dyslexia

Yes. And dyscalculia. Both are well documented in Cher's own words across interviews, autobiographies, and public appearances spanning more than three decades.

The diagnosis came when Cher was around thirty, through her child. When Chaz Bono was ten and struggling with reading, Cher took him to a testing centre. The clinicians identified dyslexia in Chaz and, as is standard practice when a hereditary condition surfaces in a child, asked Cher about her own experience. She told them "how my mind raced ahead of my hand, how I'd skip letters in the middle of a word. I told them how I kept transposing numbers, and that I'd get so cranky trying to dial long-distance calls that someone would finally have to take the phone and dial the number for me."

The response was immediate recognition. "It was like a big, Ohhh... Now I understood everything, why I had so much trouble with school. It all fit together."

She has described the experience of discovering the word dyslexia with characteristic directness: "When I read some of the literature they sent me about dyslexia, I thought, Oh s---. That's me." She says she had "never even heard the word" before Chaz's diagnosis.

This pattern — a parent discovering their own dyslexia through a child's assessment — is one of the most common routes to late diagnosis in adults. Dyslexia is highly heritable; twin studies estimate heritability between 40 and 80 percent. When a child is identified, the diagnostic questions often illuminate a parent's entire history.

What school felt like without a name for it

Cherilyn Sarkisian was born on 20 May 1946 in El Centro, California. Her father, John Sarkisian, was an Armenian American truck driver with drug and gambling problems who was rarely present. Her mother, Georgia Holt, was a model and aspiring actress who married seven times — including twice to Sarkisian — and moved the family constantly. Young Cher attended multiple schools across California in a childhood defined by instability.

In that environment, a learning difference did not get noticed. There was no stable framework for anyone to observe a pattern. Report cards said she was not living up to her potential — the signature phrase of the undiagnosed dyslexic child — but nobody investigated why.

"I couldn't read quickly enough to get all my homework done," Cher wrote in her 1998 autobiography The First Time. "And for me, math was like trying to understand Sanskrit."

That second sentence points to the dyscalculia. Research by Brian Butterworth at University College London has shown that dyscalculia — a specific difficulty with number sense, numerical magnitude, and arithmetic — affects an estimated 3 to 7 percent of the population and co-occurs with dyslexia at rates far higher than chance. A 2010 study by Karin Landerl and Kristina Moll found that a core deficit in reading makes a child four to five times more likely to also show a deficit in numerical processing. Cher has both: the words would not decode, and the numbers would not stay still.

She has described her number difficulties in vivid terms: "Numbers and I have absolutely no relationship." She has said she can "dial a phone OK, as long as it's not long distance." The transposition of digits, the inability to hold number sequences in working memory, the frustration that builds when a task everyone else handles automatically requires conscious, exhausting effort — these are textbook markers of dyscalculia in adults.

Frustrated after failing several classes, Cher dropped out of high school her junior year. She was sixteen. It was 1962. And she moved to Los Angeles.

How a dyslexic teenager became half of Sonny and Cher

In November 1962, sixteen-year-old Cher met Salvatore "Sonny" Bono, who was eleven years older and working for record producer Phil Spector at Gold Star Studios in Hollywood. Sonny recognised something in the teenager — not her reading ability, but her ear. Her voice. The way she heard music.

This is where the cognitive profile becomes important. Cher has said that "almost everything I learned, I had to learn by listening." That sentence describes more than a preference. The music did not require her to read. It required her to listen, to feel rhythm, to deliver emotional content through her contralto voice with timing and conviction. Every one of those skills sits on the other side of the phonemic bottleneck from reading.

The ear that changed television

In 1971, The Sonny & Cher Comedy Hour premiered on CBS. It ran for three seasons and drew over 30 million viewers weekly. Cher — a high school dropout with undiagnosed dyslexia — was now performing scripted comedy sketches, musical numbers, and improvisational banter on live national television.

How did she manage the scripts? The same way she managed everything else: by listening. Variety shows of that era relied heavily on rehearsal, read-throughs, and repetition. The format also allowed for ad-libbing, and Sonny and Cher were known for blending written material with spontaneous exchanges so seamlessly that no one could tell which was which. For a performer whose auditory processing and verbal expression are strong but whose text decoding is slow, this format is far less hostile than a film set where pages of dialogue arrive the morning of a shoot.

The television career led to the acting career. In 1983, Cher earned an Academy Award nomination for her role in Silkwood alongside Meryl Streep. In 1988, she won the Academy Award for Best Actress for Moonstruck. The trajectory from music to television to film represents not reinvention but redirection — the same cognitive strengths expressed through progressively different output channels.

Cher herself has described this pattern with an image that captures the cognitive architecture perfectly: "I feel like I always thought of myself as a bumper car, 'cause like if I hit the wall, I would just back up and go in a different direction."

Cher's voice — a deep, rich contralto with an immediately recognisable timbre — has been the constant across every decade and every reinvention. The voice is the output channel that never required decoding from text.

The relationship between dyslexia and musical ability is more complex than popular accounts suggest. Dyslexia does not confer musical talent. But the auditory processing system in individuals with dyslexia is not uniformly impaired — the deficit is specific to phonemic representation, the mapping of written symbols to speech sounds. Other dimensions of auditory processing — sensitivity to pitch, timbre, rhythm, and emotional tone — can be entirely intact and, in some cases, may develop enhanced sensitivity as compensatory pathways.

A 2014 study by Martina Herons-Gilmore and colleagues, published in Dyslexia, examined auditory temporal processing in musicians with dyslexia and found that while these musicians showed the expected phonological deficits, their auditory temporal discrimination — the ability to detect fine timing differences in sound — was comparable to non-dyslexic musicians. The phonemic bottleneck did not extend to the broader auditory system.

For Cher, the implication is clear. The same brain that struggles to decode written English can process musical sound with extraordinary precision. The page is difficult. The microphone is home.

In the 1970s, Cher scored three consecutive number-one solo singles on the Billboard Hot 100: "Gypsys, Tramps & Thieves," "Half-Breed," and "Dark Lady." Each of these songs tells a story. Each relies on emotional delivery, rhythmic timing, and the ability to inhabit a character through voice alone. These are expression and output strengths operating at the highest level — the same dimension that makes the page painful, turned inside out and used as creative fuel.

Believe and the technology that heard what she heard

In 1998, producers Mark Taylor and Brian Rawling were working with Cher on a track called "Believe." They experimented with Auto-Tune — a pitch correction tool invented by Andy Hildebrand and introduced just a year earlier — pushing the retune speed to zero. The "Cher effect," as it came to be known, is worth pausing on. A performer who processes the world through sound rather than text heard something in a technological accident that others might have dismissed as a glitch. She recognised it as expressive — a new texture, a new way of making the voice do something emotionally resonant. This is not just creative instinct. Music critic Simon Reynolds observed that Auto-Tune had "revolutionised popular music." Cher did not invent the technology. But her ear — the same ear that compensated for the page, that learned everything by listening, that carried her from a garage in El Centro to an Oscar stage — recognised its potential before anyone else did.

The cost of compensation

None of this means the dyslexia was costless. Masking and compensation always carry a price, and Cher has been unusually honest about what hers was.

She was already a mother of two and one of the most famous women in the world before she had a word for what she experienced. For three decades, the difficulty with reading, the impossibility of numbers, the gap between what she could do and what the page demanded — all of that was unnamed. It was just failure. Just not being smart enough. Just not living up to her potential.

"It caused pain," she has said. The self-esteem damage of undiagnosed dyslexia is well documented. Research by Alexander-Passe (2006) found that adults who were diagnosed with dyslexia later in life reported significantly higher levels of anxiety, depression, and low self-worth during their undiagnosed years compared to those identified in childhood. The label, paradoxically, is the relief. It transforms "I am failing" into "I process differently."

When Cher was diagnosed at thirty, the diagnosis also revealed the dyscalculia. The combination explained the full picture — not just the reading, but the numbers, the transpositions, the inability to hold sequences. She has described her reading process with precision: "I write the first letter of the word, and my mind races to the last letter." That is a near-perfect description of the word-level processing disruption that phonemic decoding difficulties produce — the beginning and end of the word are captured, but the middle, where the sequential phonemic mapping happens, is lost.

A fan once asked Cher the question that every public figure with dyslexia eventually faces: if you could turn back time and change one thing, would it be to not have dyslexia?

Her answer: "No! It caused pain, but it's me!"

That response carries more cognitive weight than it might appear. Identity integration — the incorporation of a processing difference into one's sense of self rather than experiencing it as a deficit imposed from outside — is one of the strongest predictors of wellbeing in adults with learning differences. Research by Claudia Gianesini and colleagues (2021) found that adults who integrated their dyslexia into their identity narrative showed significantly better mental health outcomes than those who viewed it as a purely negative condition.

Cher is not saying the pain did not matter. She is saying the pain and the capacity are the same system. The mind that could not decode a page is the mind that heard "Believe" in a technological accident. The ear that learned everything by listening is the same ear that could not parse phonemes from print. You cannot remove one without removing the other.

At eighty, Cher is preparing a new Las Vegas residency. She was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2024. She is the only solo artist to have achieved number-one singles on the US Billboard charts across seven consecutive decades. Her 2024 memoir required her to acknowledge her dyslexia in a new way — she could not complete the audiobook herself, and enlisted Tony winner Stephanie J. Block, who had played her on Broadway in The Cher Show, to narrate the portions she could not manage.

That decision — asking for help with the part of the work that her processing makes hardest, rather than masking or pretending — is itself a form of cognitive maturity. It is the opposite of the sixteen-year-old who dropped out because nobody could name the difficulty. It is a woman who knows exactly how her mind works, where it excels, and where it needs support.
